Lynchburg, VA - Kara Culkin scored two first-half goals to lead the Lynchburg field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Johns Hopkins Saturday afternoon.
Culkin opened the scoring just 2:40 into the game with an unassisted goal and added a second with 8:38 remaining in the first half to give the Hornets a 2-0 lead.
Hopkins senior forward Jenny Farrelly (Clinton Township, NJ/North Hunterdon) put the Blue Jays on the board with a penalty stroke goal with 2:10 left in the first half, but Andrea Fleming scored off an assist from Dawn McGaha with 25:18 remaining to give Lynchburg a two-goal lead.
Hornet goalkeeper Joanne Yednock made the lead stand up by making 15 saves, while Blue Jay freshman Dayna Eng (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) stopped seven shots for Hopkins.
The Blue Jays lost their second in a row and fell to 2-4 despite holding a 16-11 shot advantage and a 14-3 edge in penalty corners. Lynchburg improved to 4-3 on the season.
Hopkins opens Centennial Conference play Tuesday when the Blue Jays travel to Gettsyburg for a 4 p.m. game with the Bullets.
