Fredericksburg, VA - Adrienne Trombley scored a goal and assisted on three others while Emily Falvey added two goals as the Mary Washington field hockey team defeated Johns Hopkins, 7-1, in the Blue Jays' season-opener Wednesday afternoon.

Emily Nagel scored a goal and assisted on two others for the Eagles, who improved to 2-0 on the season. JHU sophomore forward Caite Kappel (Pittsburgh, PA/Sewickley Academy) scored the only goal for Hopkins.

Falvey opened the scoring 14 minutes into the game by scoring off a feed from Brynn McGuire. Meghan McMahon followed with a goal off a Trombley assist with 9:12 remaining in the first half, and Chrissy Soper scored with 1:39 left as Mary Washington took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

The Eagles quickly put the game out of reach early in the second half, as Falvey and Sarah Sebring scored goals just 18 seconds apart to make it a five-goal game. Trombley and Nagel added goals before Kappel put Hopkins on the board with 11 seconds remaining.

Blue Jay sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Shifman (South Orange, NJ/South Orange) made nine saves for Hopkins, while Robyn Lankford stopped six shots in the Mary Washington goal. Hopkins junior defender Kate Rydstrom (Hollis, NH/Hollis Brookline) also made a defensive save for the Blue Jays.

The Blue Jays will look to bounce back Saturday when they host Juniata in their home opener at 7:30 p.m.
