Gettysburg, PA - Carrie Brown scored two goals and Lisa Giljam added another as the Gettysburg field hockey team defeated Johns Hopkins, 3-0, Tuesday afternoon in the Blue Jays' Centennial Conference opener.
Hopkins dropped its third straight game to fall to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Bullets improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
Brown scored an unassisted goal on a breakaway just 24 seconds into the game, and added another off an assist from Katie Lowe 3:33 into the second half to give Gettysburg a 2-0 lead. Giljam capped the scoring with 27:45 to play by taking a pass from Amy Ritter and beating JHU sophomore goalkeeper Meredith Shifman (South Orange, NJ/Columbia) from the top of the circle.
Bullets goalkeeper Jessy O'Neill made four saves to record the shutout, while Shifman stopped eight shots in 64 and a half minutes of action for the Blue Jays. Hopkins freshman Dayna Eng (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial) did not see a shot in the final five and a half minutes in goal, and senior defender Michelle Doll (Schaefferstown, PA/Eastern Lebanon County) recorded a defensive save.
Gettsyburg held a 15-8 edge in shots and a 7-6 advantage in penalty corners.
The Blue Jays return home Friday when Hopkins hosts No. 11 Muhlenberg at 7 p.m. at Homewood Field.
