WASHINGTON, DC - Senior co-captain Nick Koenemann scored a game-high four goals in George Washington's (3-10 overall, 1-5 CWPA) first league win of the year, a 9-8 edge over the Johns Hopkins water polo team on Tuesday night. The Blue Jays (9-9 overall, 4-8 CWPA) defeated the Colonials in their previous two meetings this season, 9-6 and 10-9, and this was their sixth game decided by one goal.
Johns Hopkins led 3-1 after the first quarter behind two goals from James Singleton (Los Angeles, CA/Harvard-Westlake) but George Washington rallied to a 5-4 halftime lead with two goals from Nick Eddy and three saves by keeper Tom Mills.
Each team scored once in the third period and the game was tied three times in the fourth before the Colonials scored two in a row for a 9-7 lead in the final two minutes. Brian Mead (Palo Alto, CA/Gunn) scored his third goal of the game with two seconds remaining.
Singleton and Mead finished with three goals for Johns Hopkins while Robert Bates (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) and Mac Sanford (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) chipped in one apiece.
The Blue Jays travel to Claremont, CA for the Claremont Convergence Tournament this weekend.
