BRIDGEPORT, PA – The Johns Hopkins water polo program earned major accolades this week, as three Blue Jays were named to the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) All-America Team, announced Wednesday. Freshman
Luke Mendelsohn was named to the first team, while freshman
Mason Hofmann earned second team recognition. Sophomore
Phillip Long secured the Blue Jays third All-America selection with an honorable mention nod.
The three All-America selections mark the 28
th consecutive year that Johns Hopkins has had at least one student-athlete earn ACWPC All-America honors and the sixth straight year with multiple Blue Jays recognized. It is also the third straight season that JHU has had multiple freshmen named to the All-America team. With these selections, the Blue Jays have now produced 80 ACWPC All-Americans since 1992, including 15 under head coach
Max Schlegel.
Mendelsohn, the MPSF East Newcomer of the Year, earned his first career First Team All-America honor. He counts 58 goals and 44 assists for a team-leading 102 points to his credit along with a MPSF-high 55 steals. His 102 points rank first in school history by a freshman, while his 58 goals rank fourth. He has registered at least one goal in 25 of 28 games this season and has posted at least two points in 25 of 28 games as well.
Hofmann, a MPSF First Team All-Conference honoree, leads the team in goals (68) and points (102) and ranks fourth in assists (34). Hofmann's 68 goals rank as the highest single-season total in program history by a freshman, while his 102 points rank first. The attacker has registered 16 multi-goal games this season, has 16 games with three or more points and counts 31 steals.
Long, a MPSF First Team All-Conference selection, earned his second career ACWPC honorable mention accolade¾he becomes the 25
th Blue Jay to earn multiple honors. Long finished his sophomore campaign with 46 goals and 25 assists for 71 points¾the second most on the team. The center-defender has also accounted for 17 field blocks, which ranks second in the MPSF. He has posted 14 multi-goal and 20 multi-point games on the year.
