HAVERFORD, Pa. --The Haverford College men's basketball team jumped to a big early lead and never looked back as the Fords raced past Johns Hopkins, 69-49 at Alumni Field House Saturday afternoon. The win improves the Fords' record to 10-11, 8-7 in the Centennial Conference. Johns Hopkins had its two-game winning streak snapped and falls to 14-7, 10-5.
Haverford used a 23-4 run over a 13-minute span in the first half to extend a 6-5 lead to 24-9 with just over three minutes remaining before halftime. Jeremy Bass fueled the run with seven of his 17 points coming during the spree. Matt Stein added six points during the run for the Fords, who finally saw their run end when Matt Griffin and Eric Toback hit back-to-back jumpers and Toback hit a three-pointer to pull the Blue Jays to within 29-16.
Haverford carried a 35-18 lead into halftime and the Blue Jays used an early 10-4 run to pull within 43-32 midway through the second half, but a three-pointer by Johnny Elefterakis pushed the lead back to 14 and the Blue Jays never got closer than that in the final 11 minutes.
Bass led three Haverford players in double figures with his 17 points, while Mark Gabriel added 16 points and 13 rebounds and Stein chipped in with 14 points and eight rebounds. The Fords out-rebounded the Blue Jays, 43-31 and hit 27-of-52 (.519) shots from the floor in picking up their first win over Johns Hopkins since February 3, 1996.
Toback led the Blue Jays with 17 points and 11 rebounds, but he was the only Hopkins player to score in double-figures. Griffin, making the first start of his career in place of injured starter Dan Nawrocki, scored eight points and added five rebounds, but the Blue Jays hit just 21-of-65 (.323) shots from the floor, including just 3-of-12 from three-point range.
Johns Hopkins will return to action on Wednesday night when the Blue Jays play at Gettysburg.
