Baltimore, MD - Johns Hopkins freshman attacker Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's of Annapolis) scored five goals and added an assist in her first collegiate game to lead the No. 20 Blue Jays to a 21-5 win over Davidson in their 2004 season-opener Sunday afternoon at Homewood Field.
Senior midfielder Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's-DE) added three goals and five assists for Hopkins, which won its season-opener for the first time since the 1999 season. The Wildcats fell to 0-3 overall and 0-2 in the American Lacrosse Conference.
The Blue Jays jumped on Davidson early, scoring seven goals in the first 8:09 of the game. Junior midfielder Anne Crisafulli (Garden City, NY/Garden City) opened the scoring off an assist from Key, and Pearce and junior defender Lacey-Leigh Hentz (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) added unassisted goals as the Blue Jays took a three-goal lead just 3:24 into the contest.
Freshman midfielder Steph Janice (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) then scored her first career goal off an assist from Pearce, before sophomore attacker Meagan Voight (Sykesville, MD/Liberty), Key and junior Erin Riordan (Bay Shore, NY/Brightwaters) scored unassisted goals to give Hopkins the 7-0 advantage.
Molly Pickall put the Wildcats on the board with a goal off a Ruthie Hall assist at the 20:05 mark, but the Blue Jays answered with eight consecutive goals, including two each by Pearce and sophomore attacker Molly Burnett (Auburn, NY/Auburn), to go up 15-1 with 7:29 left. Lindsay Frank and Hill scored late in the half to make it a 15-3 game at the break.
Hopkins continued to pour it on early in the second half, as Key scored three straight goals and junior midfielder Julia Kleene (Brighton, NY/Brighton) added one to give the Blue Jays a 19-3 lead with 17:27 on the clock. Sarah Carter and Kiften Stevens each scored for the Wildcats before Burnett and sophomore attacker Lauren Dean (Centreville, MD/Queen Anne's County) scored for Hopkins to conclude the scoring.
Becca Nussbaum made 10 saves while Leslie Smith added two in the Davidson goal, while JHU sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Riddick (Crozet, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) did not make a save while allowing three goals in 51 minutes of action. Hopkins junior goalie Catherine Sawyer (Whitehouse Station, NJ/Hunterdon Central Regional) allowed two goals in the final nine minutes.
The Blue Jays, who improved to 7-0 all-time against the Wildcats, held a 48-6 shot advantage and a 27-14 edge in ground balls. The 21 goals scored were the most since a 23-11 victory over Ohio University on March 17, 2002.
Hopkins returns to action on Thursday with a 3:30 p.m. game at George Washington.
