PHILADELPHIA - Johns Hopkins freshman Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's of Annapolis) tied her career-high with five goals to lead the No. 12 Blue Jay women's lacrosse team to a 10-6 win over Pennsylvania Tuesday night at Franklin Field.
Hopkins improved to 9-0 on the season and won its school-record ninth straight game at the Division I level. The Quakers fell to 5-4 on the year.
Penn opened the scoring just 44 seconds into the game when Sara Shelley scored off an assist from Chrissy Muller. The Quakers took a 2-0 lead when Caroline Finger scored a free position goal with 28:37 remaining, but Hopkins answered with three straight goals to take the lead.
Key put the Blue Jays on the board with 25:25 left, and after sophomore Meagan Voight (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) won the ensuing draw control and scored 15 seconds later, Key scored another unassisted goal with 21:39 left to give Hopkins a 3-2 advantage.
Penn answered at the 18:31 mark when Lindsey Cassidy scored an unassisted goal, and Muller put the Quakers back on top with an unassisted goal with 16:17 to play. However, the Blue Jay defense held Penn scoreless over the next 35 minutes, and Hopkins scored five consecutive goals to take control of the game.
Junior Erin Riordan (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) scored with 14:11 left in the half, and neither team scored the rest of the period as the Blue Jays and Quakers went into the break tied at 4-4.
Key gave Hopkins the lead for good with an unassisted goal 1:24 into the second half, and senior Heidi Pearce (Chestertown, MD/St. Andrew's-DE) added an unassisted goal with 17:17 left to make it a 6-4 game.
Pearce then won the ensuing draw control and fed Key for a goal 14 seconds later, and Key scored a free position goal with 11:57 remaining to give the Blue Jays an 8-4 lead.
Cassidy broke Penn's drought with an unassisted goal with 11:05 left, but sophomore Kelley Putnam (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) scored with 10:45 to play and Pearce added a goal with 4:58 remaining to put Hopkins up 10-5. Muller scored an unassisted goal with 3:45 to play to close the scoring.
Sophomore Lauren Riddick (Crozet, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) made seven saves for the Blue Jays, who improved to 3-0 all-time against the Quakers. Junior Lacey-Leigh Hentz (Hampstead, MD/North Carroll) led the Hopkins defense with seven ground balls, while Pearce added four ground balls and a team-high four caused turnovers. Putnam collected three ground balls, and junior Kristen Miller (Towson, MD/Notre Dame Prep) had two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Liz Lorelli stopped seven shots in the Penn goal.
Hopkins hosts No. 9 Vanderbilt Sunday at 1 p.m. in a game televised live by College Sports Television. The Blue Jays and Commodores are two of three teams unbeaten in the American Lacrosse Conference.
