BALTIMORE, MD ? Sophomore Kelli Johnson (Elma, NY/Iroquois Central) scored three goals to lead the Red Dragons of SUNY-Cortland past Johns Hopkins, 4-3 in field hockey action today at Homewood Field. Cortland is 1-0 with the win, while the Blue Jays fall to 0-2 on the season.
The Blue Jays struck first as junior Kristan Lione (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) directed home a pass from junior Heather Oravec (South Wales, NY/Iroqoius) in the 18th minute of the game. The Blue Jays maintained their lead for the majority of the first half until the Red Dragons scored two quick goals in the last five minutes to go ahead 2-1. Freshman Jen Girard (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) scored off a feed from senior Judy Slopnick (Mohawk, NY/Mohwak) with five minutes to go in the half to tie the score and less than one minute later Johnson scored the first of her three goals.
In the first minute of the second half, Johns Hopkins freshman Sarah Bender (Mattapoisett, MA/Tabor Academy) scored the first goal of her career as she got behind the defense, collected a pass from Lione, and beat Red Dragons goalkeeper Jessica Anderson (East Islip, NY/East Islip).
Johnson responded and scored two consecutive goals in the 40th and 50th minutes, respectively, to give the Red Dragons a 4-2 advantage. The Blue Jays scored with 11 minutes remaining in regulation as junior Meighan Roose (Baltimore, MD/York) deposited an Amy Soergel (Pittsburgh, PA/North Allegheny) pass into the back of the cage. The Blue Jays had several other scoring chances in the final ten minutes, but the Red Dragon defense, led by Anderson, was able to keep them from tying the score.
The Blue Jays will travel next weekend to Lexington, Virginia to play Washington & Lee on Saturday at 1:00 pm.
