CARLISE, PA - Senior Caite Kappel scored twice to lead the Johns Hopkins field hockey team to its fourth straight Centennial Conference win, a 3-1 victory at Dickinson on Wednesday afternoon. The Blue Jays improved to 7-5 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Red Devils fell to 2-10, 1-5 Centennial.
After playing nearly 34 minutes without a score, Johns Hopkins got on the board at 33:41 when Kappel scored off an assist from senior Meighan Roose. The Blue Jays led 1-0 at halftime and held an 8-4 advantage on shots and 7-4 lead on penalty corners.
Dickinson tied the game early in the second half when its leading scorer, junior Katie Austin, put in her seventh goal of the year unassisted at 42:29. But the Blue Jays outplayed the Red Devils and capitalized in the critical minutes, scoring twice in the final seven.
Freshman Leah Horton had the game-winner off an assist from junior Leah Dudley at 62:26 and Kappel sealed the win with her second goal of the game - and team-high sixth of the year - at 66:11.
The Blue Jays finished ahead on shots, 19-11, and with a 15-5 lead on penalty corners. Johns Hopkins junior Dayna Eng made eight saves in goal, while Dickinson's Kaitlin Harker totaled 10.
Dickinson leads the all-time series with Hopkins, 14-13-2, but the Blue Jays have now won six of the last eight games. Johns Hopkins is back on the road for another conference game at Haverford this Saturday, October 15, at 12 pm.
