BALTIMORE, MD - The #1 team in Division III water polo picked up two wins over Division I and Division II schools on Sunday, when Johns Hopkins defeated Bucknell 9-8 and Salem International 15-12. The Blue Jays improved to 17-5 overall this year with just one game left in the regular season.
Johns Hopkins took a 4-2 lead on Salem International after the first period, and the teams doubled their scores for an 8-4 game at the break. The Blue Jays pulled ahead 13-7 with five goals in the third quarter before Salem's attempt to rally back fell short in the final period. Salem International scored five goals in the fourth, but Hopkins held on with two of its own.
Sophomore Sean McCreery led Hopkins in scoring with four goals, while senior David Strickland had three and freshmen Peter Davis and Joey Jankiewicz each added one. The Blue Jays and Tigers entered the game ranked fifth and sixth, respectively, in the CWPA.
In their second game on Sunday, the Blue Jays led 5-3 at halftime and 6-4 entering the final period before the Bisons scored four times in the fourth to tie the game at eight. McCreery scored the game-winner with five seconds left on the clock as Hopkins avenged a 7-5 loss to Bucknell in September. McCreery finished with a game-high four goals.
The Bison entered the game ranked fourth, one spot ahead of the Blue Jays, in the CWPA and 17th in the nation. Bucknell was the second team ranked higher than Hopkins that the Blue Jays defeated over the weekend; They upset #11 Princeton on Friday.
Johns Hopkins visits George Washington this Wednesday, October 19, at 7 pm.
