BALTIMORE - Despite a game two scare from Washington College, the Johns Hopkins volleyball team was able to pull out its sixth straight match, 3-0, on Tuesday night at Goldfarb Gym.
Tonight's win gave Hopkins its seventh 20-win season in the program's 22 years, as the Blue Jays improved to 20-5, 6-1 in Centennial play.
Washington slipped to 10-15 with the loss, snapping a three-match winning streak. The Shorewomen are 2-5 in league action.
In game two, the Washington jumped out to an early advantage, eventually stretching the lead to as much as seven. With the margin at 28-21 late in the game, Hopkins began to chip away. Freshman Kim Jackanich (Pacifica, CA/St. Ignatius College Prep) served up nine consecutive points for the Blue Jays, who eventually took a 29-28 lead and went on to win 31-29, closing out the game with a 12-2 run.
The Blue Jays rolled in the other two games of the night, taking the first 30-18 and winning game three by a 30-23 count.
Senior Jen Hajj (Boca Raton, FL/Pope John Paul II) hammered a match-high 11 kills, while senior Katie O'Callaghan (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) contributed 10. Both Hajj and O'Callaghan hit over .300 for the evening.
The reigning Centennial co-player of the week, freshman Amanda Lewis (San Antonio, TX/St. Mary's Hall), led all players with 33 assists and three aces.
Washington was led defensively by senior Abigail Benson (New London, PA/Avon Grove) and her 14 digs, while sophomore Katherine O'Brien (Severna Park, MD/Severna Park) turned in 13 of her own.
On the offensive side, senior Lauren Ford (Eldersburg, MD/Liberty) had 10 kills and freshman Arielle Brown (Merion, PA/Lower Merion) collected 29 assists for the Shorewomen.
Hopkins will head to Bryn Mawr to face the Owls in a 1 p.m. match on Saturday, October 22.
