WASHINGTON, DC - The Johns Hopkins water polo team, ranked first in yesterday's Division III poll and 16th in the all-divisions national poll, defeated George Washington 11-9 in its final regular-season game of the year. The Colonials and visiting Blue Jays were knotted at eight entering the final period until sophomore Sean McCreery's two goals helped Hopkins pull out the win.
The teams matched each other's scores for the first three periods, which were tied 3-3, 5-5, and 8-8. McCreery scored two goals in the first quarter and freshman Peter Davis had two in the third to lead the Blue Jays.
In the final period, McCreery scored first to give Hopkins a 9-8 lead with 3:21 to play. He struck again with 1:49 on the clock, putting the Blue Jays up two before GW sophomore John Jennings scored his second goal of the game. Hopkins led by just one, 10-9, with 1:22 remaining.
The Blue Jays sealed the win with a goal by sophomore Chris Hemmerle with 51 seconds on the clock. McCreery finished with a team-high four goals.
Hopkins improved to 18-5 overall, while GW dropped to 10-14. The Blue Jays travel to Connecticut College this weekend for the Division III Eastern Championships.
