NASHVILLE, TN - Freshman Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century) scored the first three goals of the game and finished with the hat trick and an assist as #12 Johns Hopkins defeated the defending American Lacrosse Conference (ALC) champion #16 Vanderbilt 13-6. The Blue Jays (3-2, 3-1 ALC) led 5-3 at the half and outscored the Commodores (2-2, 0-2 ALC) 8-3 in the second period.
Schwarzmann scored her first goal just two minutes in and tallied again four minutes later off an assist from senior Anne Crisafulli (Garden City, NY/Garden City). Her career-high third goal was set up by junior Sarah Walsh (Port Washingtonl, NY/P.D. Schreiber) to give Hopkins a 3-0 lead with 19:28 to play in the first.
Vanderbilt's Margie Curran and Katie Hickman scored back-to-back unassisted goals to cut the Jays' lead to one goal, 3-2, but Hopkins ended the run with junior Meagan Voight's (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) fifth goal of the year, assisted by sophomore Steph Janice (Medford, NJ/Shawnee).
Vanderbilt's Jennifer Tapscott scored a free position shot with 12:33 left in the first before sophomore Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's) put in her first goal of the game, and 15th of the season, on a one-on-one move to the net. Hopkins led 5-3 at the half.
The Blue Jays out-shot the Commodores 18-12 and had a 13-10 edge in ground balls after the first period.
Meg Spies opened the second half with a goal just 43 seconds in, bringing the Commodores within one, 5-4. That was the closest they would get. After a goal from Walsh, junior Kelley Putnam (Moorestown, NJ/Moorestown) scored her first goal of the season and Crisafulli scored Hopkins' third straight to extend its lead to four goals, 8-4.
Hickman scored her team-high second goal for Vanderbilt before Hopkins outscored the Commodores 5-1 in the final 20 minutes of the game.
Schwarzmann finished with three goals and an assist, while Key and Walsh each added two goals and an assist. Junior Lauren Riddick (Crozet, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) made seven saves for Hopkins.
The Blue Jays dominated possession throughout the game, winning 17 of 21 draw controls and out-shooting the Commodores 35-19. Freshman Kadie Stamper (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) finished with seven draw controls.
Hopkins returns to action at George Mason on March 23 (5 p.m.)
