BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore Mary Key scored a game-high four goals and added two assists as the #12 Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team routed #13 Penn 13-4 at Homewood Field. The Blue Jays (6-2, 3-1 ALC) led 6-2 at halftime and never let up en route to their fifth straight win this year and their fourth consecutive win over the Quakers (4-3, 1-1 Ivy).
Penn got on the board first with an Allie Juras free position goal 2:07 into the game but Hopkins responded with five unanswered goals in the next 20 minutes. Key scored the first two - her first goal set up by Ashley Schwarzmann and her second on unassisted move to goal - to give Hopkins its first lead, 2-1, nine minutes into the game.
Sarah Walsh slid a pass to Erin Riordan for the Blue Jays' third goal with 16:09 on the clock, before Walsh scored a goal of her own off an assist from Key six minutes later. Kadie Stamper capped Johns Hopkins' run with an unassisted goal with eight minutes remaining, and the Blue Jays led 5-1.
Juras broke Penn's scoring drought with her second goal of the game but Key regained the momentum for Johns Hopkins when she slipped through several defenders for another goal with one minute remaining.
The Blue Jays led 6-2 at the break and had an 11-6 shot advantage, although Penn edged Hopkins in draw controls, 5-4, and was tied in ground balls, 14-14.
Key started the second period with her fourth goal of the game, and third unassisted, after just 53 seconds expired. A quick stick trick got Penn's goalkeeper Liz Lorelli off balance, and Key dropped the shot into the corner of the net. Just under four minutes later, Lacey-Leigh Hentz scored her first goal of the season off a free position shot to give Hopkins a commanding 8-2 lead.
The Quakers closed in 8-4 when Juras assisted an Ali Ryan goal and then scored her third goal, but the Hopkins defense shut out Penn for the rest of the game and the Blue Jay offense slowed down to control the pace. Walsh and Annie Wagner each scored two goals in the final eight minutes as Hopkins sealed the win.
Walsh finished with a season-high three goals and an assist, while Erin Riordan and Wagner added two goals apiece and Hentz had a goal and an assist. Anne Crisafulli recorded four ground balls and two draw controls for the Blue Jays. Juras led Penn with three goals and an assist.
In goal, Lorelli had 11 saves for Penn and Hopkins' Lauren Riddick tallied eight.
Hopkins finished with a 28-17 shot advantage and 26-19 lead on ground balls, but Penn edged the Jays in draw controls, 11-8.
Johns Hopkins returns to action next Wednesday, April 6 against UMBC. The Blue Jays host the Retrievers at 5 p.m.
