Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - Lori Havrilla had four goals and an assist and All-American goalkeeper Lee Tortorelli stopped a free-position shot with two seconds remaining, as #10 Penn State edged #11 Johns Hopkins 9-8 in an American Lacrosse Conference (ALC) matchup at Homewood Field. The win improved the Nittany Lions to 11-4 overall and 4-1 in the conference, while the Blue Jays dropped to 10-5, 3-3 ALC.

The game was tied five times, but Johns Hopkins never led until midway through the second half. After the Blue Jays pulled ahead 7-6 with 14:28 to play, and 8-7 with 9:37 to play, Penn State scored two straight goals to walk away with its fourth win in four meetings with Hopkins.

The Blue Jays, with possession for the final 1:30, had several chances to send the game into overtime, but the Penn State defense proved too strong. Hopkins' go-to scorer, Mary Key, was double-teamed and unable to get off a good shot, while the rest of the defense adjusted to cover the other scoring threats. Lauren Schwarzmann drew a free-position attempt with two seconds remaining, but her shot was stopped by Tortorelli.

Penn State jumped to a 2-0 lead with a stall offense that limited the Blue Jays' time of possession. Havrilla, who led all scorers with four goals, opened the game with a free-position shot four minutes into the game, and Kristen Burke scored an unassisted goal one-and-a-half minutes later.

Hopkins tied the game 2-2 after 7:49 of play as Key set up Sarah Walsh for the first Blue Jay goal and Kelley Putnam scored on an unassisted move to the net. Havrilla answered with two straight goals for a 4-2 Penn State lead before Key put in her first goal of the game for a 4-3 score at halftime.

Despite a full-field pressure defense by Penn State, Hopkins scored the first two goals, both from Schwarzmann, after the break to tie the game at five with 28:33 remaining. Shari Maslin assisted an Emily Chambers goal to regain the lead for Penn State, but Key put in her second goal of the game and then assisted Meagan Voight for Hopkins' first advantage of the game, 7-6, with 14:28 to p lay.

Burke, Penn State's leading scorer, briefly tied the score again with an unassisted goal but Schwarzmann, sliding ground on the wet turf, slipped a pass to Annie Wagner for the go-ahead goal. Hopkins led 8-7 with 9:37 to play.

Lindsay Dutch tied the game for the fifth time with 7:35 remaining before Havrilla scored her fourth goal of the game, and the game-winner, with 3:44 on the clock.

Key finished with two goals and two assists, bringing her season total to a school record 76 points. The Johns Hopkins Division I record for points in a season was 74, set by Key as a freshman last season.

Schwarzmann added two goals and one assist for Johns Hopkins.

Penn State edged Hopkins on shots (24-20), ground balls (18-12), and draw controls (10-9). Tortorelli finished with three saves, while Blue Jay keeper Lauren Riddick tied a career-high with 12 saves.

Johns Hopkins plays the final game of its regular season at Georgetown next Saturday, May 7, at noon.
