BALTIMORE - Despite scoring only one point in the game's final 2:11, Ursinus (9-4, 6-1) held on for a 69-66 win over Johns Hopkins (10-3, 6-1) in Centennial Conference men's basketball at Goldfarb Gym on Thursday night.
The Bears extended their second half advantage to as much as nine points twice, but the Blue Jays were able to close the gap to 68-66, before missing on three field goal tries with less than a minute to play.
After leading 22-14 at the 7:46 mark of the first half, the Bears used a 7-0 run to trim the margin to 22-21 before outscoring Hopkins 7-2 in the final three minutes of the period to erase the lead and take a 33-31 advantage to the break.
A 53.3 percent (14-for-26) shooting performance in the second half helped the Bears take the lead for good, while Hopkins only hit on 9-of-22 (40.9%) attempts from the floor.
Ursinus got 17 points a piece from senior Brian McEvily and sophomore Nick Shattuck. Shattuck was 6-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Hopkins saw two scorers reach the 20-point mark, as junior Danny Nawrocki (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) delivered 22 points, while junior Matt Griffin (Glen Mills, PA/Penncrest) scored 20. Griffin pulled in a career-high 10 rebounds for his first career double-double.
Hopkins failed to shoot over 50 percent for the first time in seven games, connecting on only 41.8 (23-for-55) tries from the field.
The Blue Jays are back in action on Saturday, Jan. 14, when the travel to Muhlenberg for a 2 p.m. contest.
