GETTYSBURG, PA - Gettysburg pressured Johns Hopkins into 33 percent shooting from the field and 23 turnovers, gaining a 58-41 Centennial Conference men's basketball verdict on Wednesday night at Hen Bream Gymnasium.
The Blue Jays (13-4, 9-2) turned in their lowest shooting percentage of the season, making only 14-of-42 attempts from the field, and 2-of-11 tries (18.2%) from behind the arc. The 41-point output was Hopkins' lowest of the season as well, dipping below the 55 points scored at Furman on Nov. 26.
The Bullets (10-8, 6-5) pieced together a strong defensive effort, forcing 12 steals and picking up six blocks. Senior Mike Spadafora grabbed five steals while junior Julius Redd had three blocks.
Senior Todd Brady registered a game-high 14 points in the winning effort, hitting on 5-of-8 tries from the field and 4-of-5 attempts from the free throw line.
In the second half, Brady netted 10 points, including the first seven of the period for the Bullets, as his three-point play at 15:01 followed by two made free throws less than two minutes later gave Gettysburg a 37-28 lead, its largest margin at the time.
Senior Matt Whelan chipped in 13 points for Gettysburg, along with a game-high four assists. Whelan's layup at 6:43 of the first half gave the Bullets their first lead of the night at 17-16.
Junior Danny Nawrocki (Syosset, NY/Chaminade) tallied 13 markers along with nine rebounds for the Blue Jays. Hopkins also got 11 points from junior Matt Griffin (Glen Mills, PA/Penncrest).
The loss snapped a five-game road winning streak for the Blue Jays, who gained all five wins in Centennial play. Following losses this season, Hopkins is 2-1.
Hopkins looks to get back in the win column on Saturday, hosting the Shoremen of Washington College at 2 p.m. The Blue Jays handed Washington a 90-70 loss back on Jan. 7.
