PHILADELPHIA, PA - Junior attacker Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St Mary's) scored five goals and added three assists as the #3 Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team held off a feisty Penn team for a 12-9 win. Hopkins remained unbeaten at 7-0 while Penn falls to 5-4 on the season.
It was high paced game from the opening whistle, as Key scored her first of the game and 25th of the season just 39 seconds in. Penn came right back at 2:32 with a goal from Ali Ryan. Hopkins then sandwiched five goals around a score from Rachel Manson to build up a 6-2 lead. Penn called a timeout and then got a goal from Emily Cochran to make it 6-3.
Sophomores Kadie Stamper (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) and Annie Wagner (Annapolis, MD/St. Paul's) scored back-to-back goals to push the Blue Jays' lead back up to 8-3. But Penn went on a three goal run with scores from Manson, Caroline Finger and Melissa Lehman to make 8-6 heading into the lockerrom.
Penn came out firing in the second half and made it a one-goal game at 4:57 with a goal from Allison Ambrozy. Hopkins answered with goals from Key and Wagner to end the Quakers' run with 13:37 to play.
But Penn came right back when Lehman scored her second of the night, cutting the lead to 10-8 with 10:36 to play. Key answered with her fourth of the night with 3:24 pushing the lead back to three, seemingly putting the game away. But once again the Quakers answered, with a goal from Becca Edwards. With time ticking down, the Penn defense got a stop but on the ensuing clear attempt, the Jays forced a turnover. Key came up with the loose ball and scored with six seconds remaining to give Hopkins the win.
Hopkins is 7-0 to start the season for just the second time since moving to Division I in 1999. It is the fifth time overall. The Blue Jays are now 25-1 when Key scores three or more goals. Freshman Amelia Harris (Clifton, VA/J.W. Robinson), making her second consecutive start in net, made a career-high seven saves for the win.
The Blue Jays return to action on Sunday, April 2 when the Vanderbilt Commodores visit Homewood Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
