Box Score

BALTIMORE, MD - The #2 Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse team outscored #7 Maryland in the second half but it was not enough to overcome the first half deficit, as the Terps defeated the Blue Jays 14-11 at Homewood Field Sunday afternoon. The loss was the first of the season for the Jays who fall to 8-1 on the season. Maryland improves to 10-4.

Maryland came out firing in the first half, taking a quick two goal lead on goals by Krista Pellizzi and Katie Doolittle. Hopkins cut the lead to 2-1 on sophomore Kirby Houck's (Baltimore, MD/Garrison Forest) seventh goal of the season. Houck picked up a loose ball off a senior Meagan Voight (Sykesville, MD/Liberty) free position attempt and fired the ball past Maryland's Allie Buote at 9:20. Maryland answered with a fast break goal from Katie Princiotto to make it 3-1, but Hopkins came back with a goal from junior Sarah Walsh (Port Washington, NY/P.D. Schreiber) just 12 seconds later. Junior Mary Key (Stevensville, MD/St. Mary's) and Walsh had a two-on-one after winning the draw, and Key passed to Walsh who beat Buote to make it a one-goal game.

Maryland responded with a five goal run in less than six minutes to take an 8-2 lead. At 7:36 freshman Amelia Harris (Clifton, VA/J.W. Robinson) came in at goal for Hopkins and just 22 seconds later, made a huge save on a one-on-one against Casey Magor. That save gave the Jays a lift and they capitalized less than two minutes later with Key's first goal of the afternoon and cut the lead to 8-3. Pellizzi pushed the lead back to six with her third of the day with 2:40 to play. Hopkins had the final say of the half, as sophomore Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century) scored after picking up a loose ball with just 22 seconds in the half. That goal ignited a 7-2 run for the Blue Jays that would stretch well into the second.

Hopkins came out quickly in the second, when Key scored just 2:11 into the half off a feed from Walsh, to make it a 9-5 game. Princiotto scored her second of the day to push the lead back to five. Back came Hopkins with another goal from Key and another assist for Walsh. Doolittle came right back for Maryland with her third of the day. The Blue Jays then scored three unanswered to close the gap to 11-10, with goals from Key and sophomores Kadie Stamper (Bel Air, MD/C. Milton Wright) and Annie Wagner (Annapolis, MD/St. Paul's). Maryland ended the run and pushed its lead back to two goals, just 14 seconds after Wagner's goal, with Pellizzi's fourth of the day. Maryland sandwiched goals around a strike from Stamper to make it a 14-11 game.

Harris tied a career-high with seven saves and senior Lauren Riddick (Crozet, VA/St. Anne's-Belfield) played the first 22:24 without a save. Buote finished with eight saves for Maryland. Walsh led the Jays with six points on two goals and four assists. She also picked up two ground balls. Key finished with five points on four goals and one assist. She also had two ground balls, two draw controls and two caused turnovers. With her five point effort, Key moves into second place in Hopkins Division I history with 219 career points. She is now just 34 shy of tying Jamie Larrimore's 253. Junior Steph Janice (Medford, NJ/Shawnee) had seven ground balls for the Jays. Pellizzi finished with four goals and three assists for Maryland. Doolittle also had four goals and one assist.

Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, April 12 as the Blue Jays travel across town to face UMBC. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
