BALTIMORE, MD - The #17 Johns Hopkins water polo team won its seventh straight match over visiting George Washington Tuesday night, 13-6. The Blue Jays have won five of their last seven and improve their record to 6-7 overall. Senior All-American Sean McCreery (Pleasant Hill, CA/ De La Salle) led Hopkins with four goals and an assist on the night.
The first half was tightly contested, with George Washington getting on the board first. John-Claude Wright gave the Colonials the early lead just 2:03 in. Junior All-American Peter Davis (Riverside, CT/Greenwich) answered for the Blue Jays, tying it up at 1-1. A back-and-forth ensued as the Blue Jays answered each Colonials' goal. Hopkins took its first lead of the game at 5-4 with just 10 seconds to play before the half, when Davis scored on a long outlet pass from junior goalie Chris Hutchens (Los Altos, CA/Bellarmine Prep).
Hopkins came out strong in the third quarter, scoring three goals in a span of just 34 seconds to push out to a 7-4 lead. Wright ended the Blue Jays run with his second of the night, cutting the score to 7-5. Senior Chris Hemmerle (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) stole the ball and scored to make it an 8-5 game with just 12 seconds left in the quarter.
The Blue Jays offense continued to click in the fourth quarter with Davis, McCreery, juniors Josh Kratz (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) and Jesse Fox (San Diego, CA/Valhalla) all scoring, making it a 13-5 game. Marshall Freedman scored for the Colonials with just 21 seconds on the clock to make it 13-6. It was the first goal for George Washington since 3:09 in the third.
Senior Andrew McTammany (Hampstead, NH/Exeter) and Hutchens combined for 11 saves in the win for Hopkins. Davis finished with three goals and two assists, while Hemmerle also had three goals.
The Blue Jays, now 2-1 in the CWPA Southern Division, return to action at the Claremont Convergence Tournament this weekend in California. Hopkins and La Verne will square off on October 5 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps at 11:40 am (PT). Hopkins will then face the host, CMS at 7:40 pm (PT). On October 6, Hopkins will face UC Santa Cruz and Redlands.
