BALTIMORE, MD - Sixth-ranked Christopher Newport held off eighth-ranked Johns Hopkins 3-1 on Monday afternoon. The loss ended a six-game win streak for the Blue Jays who fall to 9-2 on the season. The Captains improve to 11-1 with their 11th straight win.
Sophomore goalie Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) kept the game scoreless with 13 minutes to play in the half when she stopped a penalty stroke by Stephanie Blair. CNU got on the board at 24:03 when Ashley Hay tipped home a shot by Taylor Harrell. Hopkins came right back though, knotting the score at 1-1 just over a minute later. Junior Adair Landy (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) sent in a hard pass from outside to senior Megan Maguire (Laurel, MD/Hammond), who tipped it past Elexa Nosonchuk at the far post. The Captains retook the lead at 30:22 on a nearly identical play to Hopkins goal. Blair passed the ball down to Kylie Cale, who redirected it past Tieu to make it 2-1.
The Captains came out fast to start the second half and quickly found the back of the cage to take a 3-1 lead. Kelly Jo Broadhurst passed the ball to Ashley Traylor, who blasted a hard shot from up top just inside the right post.
Tieu finished with nine saves for Hopkins, while Nosonchuk made four saves for the win. The Blue Jays goal ended the Captains' shut out streak of eight consecutive games. CNU had the edge in shots (15-8) and corners (7-5).
Hopkins returns to action on Wednesday, October 10 at #20 Franklin & Marshall. The Centennial Conference game is set for 4:30 pm.
