LANCASTER, PA - A late three-pointer from Franklin & Marshall's Beth Holt lifted the Diplomats to a 73-71 victory over the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team on Tuesday night. The Blue Jays (1-3, 0-1 CC) received a career-high in points from sophomore Britni Lonesome.
It didn't look like a second half comeback would be possible as Hopkins came out of the locker room leading 41-35. A pair of free throws by the Diplomats' Sarah Meisenberg cut the Blue Jays' lead to one at 43-42 with 16:48 to go in the game. Hopkins responded with a 21-4 run to take its largest lead of the contest, 64-46 with 9:26 to play. Senior Andrea Dodrill and sophomore Monica Mitchell each had four points for the Blue Jays during that stretch. Lonesome also knocked down four during that stretch. Franklin & Marshall responded with a 27-7 run over the final 9:03 of the game to capture the victory. Holt had 11 of the Diplomats' points during that stretch including the game-winning basket with four seconds to go. Meisenberg also nailed down nine points for F&M.
The first half of the contest saw Franklin & Marshall jump out to the early 12-2 lead thanks to a 10-0 run over the first four minutes of the half. Meisenberg had eight points during that stretch. Hopkins responded with a 13-6 run to cut the deficit to three with 12:37 to go in the first half. Junior Jonay Foster had eight points during that stretch for Hopkins. A three-pointer from Lonesome with 9:41 to go in the half, gave Hopkins its first lead of the contest at 22-21. The two teams traded buckets over the next couple of minutes before another three from Lonesome with 2:08 to go in the half gave Hopkins' its biggest lead at 10 points. Hopkins led 41-35 at the break.
Hopkins was led by Lonesome, who scored a career-high 18 points in the contest while Foster poured in 11 points. Dodrill just missed a double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Junior Kristin Phillips recorded a game-high 10 rebounds.
Franklin & Marshall was led by Meisenberg, who connected for 24 points in the game. She also led the Diplomats with eight rebounds. Holt scored 13 while Brittany Braxton nailed down 11 points. Amanda Miceli was the fourth Diplomat in double figures with 10 points in the game.
Hopkins will look to snap a three-game losing streak when it hosts Swarthmore on Saturday, December 1. Game time in Goldfarb Gymnasium is set for 1 p.m.
