BALTIMORE, MD - Junior forward Kristin Phillips (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) and freshman forward Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) combined for 24 points and 23 rebounds to lead the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team to a 78-45 victory over Swarthmore on Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays (2-3, 1-1 CC) snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory and won their ninth straight contest against the Garnet (2-3, 1-1 CC).
A free throw by Swarthmore's Kathryn Stockbower at 17:11 of the first half gave the Garnet a 3-2 lead, it would be the last lead the Garnet would hold in the game. Hopkins responded with a 24-10 run to take a 31-13 lead with 4:44 to go in the first half. Junior Jonay Foster (Chicago, IL/Oak Park River Forest) had seven big points during the stretch. Junior Caitlin Sloane (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) had six points on a pair of threes while Phillips contributed five. A lay-up by sophomore Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic Institute) with 1:36 to go in the first half gave Hopkins a 39-18 advantage, its largest of the first half. Laura Popovics hit a three with 1:20 remaining before junior Sarah DePaolo (Asheville, NC/Westover) hit a jumper with :43 seconds to go to send the Blue Jays into the locker-room with a 41-22 advantage.
Swarthmore opened the second half on a 14-2 run to cut its deficit to nine with 13:39 remaining in the game. The Garnet got seven points from Ceylan Bodur and four from Karen Berk. The Blue Jays responded with an 18-7 run to take a 63-43 lead with 5:27 to go in the contest. Hopkins got three points from Phillips and four from sophomore Monica Mitchell (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg). Hopkins outscored Swarthmore 15-2 over the final five minutes for the 78-45 victory. Phillips and senior Andrea Dodrill (Baltimore, MD/Bryn Mawr) each nailed four points during that stretch.
Phillips posted her first double-double of the year with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Burton contributed her first career double-double with career-highs of 12 points and 12 rebounds. Lonesome reached double figures for the second straight contest with 10 points, four assists and four steals. DePaolo also posted career-highs with seven points and nine rebounds.
Stockbower and Berk each posted a double-double for Swarthmore. Stockbower had a game-high 15 points and 12 rebounds for her fourth double-double in five games. Berk posted 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Garnet while Bodur knocked down 11 points.
Hopkins is back in action on Tuesday, December 4 when the Blue Jays visit Gettysburg. Tip time is set for 7 p.m.
