Mooney Joins Women's Lacrosse Staff

July 12, 2007

BALTIMORE, MD - Johns Hopkins women's lacrosse head coach Janine Tucker announced today the hiring of Jo Mooney as an assistant coach. Mooney joins the Blue Jays after coaching stints at Colgate University and Davidson College. Her responsibilities will include coaching the Blue Jays' defense as well as recruiting coordinator.

"We are thrilled to welcome Joanna Mooney into our Hopkins family," said Tucker. "She is an extremely talented and passionate coach who will be an excellent role model for our players. Coach Jo brings energy, intensity and enthusiasm to our program and is an impressive recruiter. I can't wait to work with her."

At both Colgate and Davidson, Mooney created practice plans and game strategies as well as composing and coordinating the summer and winter workouts. A four-year letterwinner and 2004 graduate of Vanderbilt University, Mooney captained the Commodores to two American Lacrosse Conference championships and a national semifinal appearance.

"I am thrilled to be joining the Johns Hopkins Women's Lacrosse Program," Mooney said. "I would like to thank Coach Tucker and Athletic Director Tom Calder for the opportunity to become part of such a strong winning tradition. I am looking forward to returning home to Baltimore and helping to build on the program's success."

The Blue Jays return seven starters, including four of their top six scorers, from a team that went 12-8 and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2007. Leading the way in 2008 for Hopkins will be senior middie Lauren Schwarzmann (Sykesville, MD/Century) and reigning ALC Rookie of the Year, Sam Schrum (Pasadena, MD/St. Mary's). Schwarzmann finished third on the team in 2007 with 40 points on 30 goals and 10 assists. Schrum ranked fourth with 30 goals and nine assists.
