SALISBURY, MD - The #12 Johns Hopkins field hockey team dropped a tough 2-1 loss at #8 Salisbury on Wednesday afternoon. It is the first loss of the season for the Blue Jays who fall to 3-1, while the Sea Gulls improve to 5-1.
Salisbury got on the board just 2:51 into the game when Beverly Beladino deflected Danielle Twilley's pass past Johns Hopkins goalie Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino). The Blue Jays pressured the Sea Gulls and goalie Maria Ramoundos for the majority of the first half, firing 12 shots and earning seven corners.
The Sea Gulls added to their lead with 3:10 to play in the half when Lauren Correll scored off an assist from Ashley Twigg. Hopkins got on the board with time winding down in the half, taking advantage of a penalty corner. Graduate student Leah Dudley (Westborough, MA/Westborough) set up junior Adair Landy (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) for her third of the season as she beat Ramoundos to the right corner with no left on the clock.
The second half was a defensive struggle as the two teams battled for possession. The teams combined for just four shots in the second half (JHU-3, SU-1) and eight corners (SU-6, JHU-2). Neither team found the back of the net in the second half as Salisbury held on for the 2-1 win. Tieu finished with one save for the Blue Jays, while Ramoundos made 10 saves for the Sea Gulls.
The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, September 15 as they host the Gettysburg Bullets in the both teams' Centennial Conference opener. The match is set for 1:00 pm at historic Homewood Field.
