BALTIMORE, MD - The #12 Johns Hopkins Blue Jays needed an extra 17 seconds to top the visiting Gettysburg Bullets 2-1 in overtime at historic Homewood Field Saturday. Hopkins improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference, while Gettysburg drops to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the conference. It was the 65th conference win for head coach Megan Callahan Fraser, breaking former Gettsyburg coach Carol Cantele's record of 64.
Gettysburg got on top early, taking a 1-0 lead just 13:37 in. Savannah Ruth banged home a loose ball from close range amid a scramble in front of the Blue Jays goal following a penalty corner. It took nearly 30 minutes, but Hopkins got the equalizer at 43:27. Junior Leah Horton (Wayne, PA/Upper Merion Area) converted a penalty stroke for her third goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1.
Neither team was able to find the go ahead goal in the remainder of the half, sending the game to overtime. Just seconds into the extra period, junior All-American Emily Miller (Garden City, NY/Garden City) took a pass from junior Adair Landy (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) and weaved through the Bullets' defense. From just to the left of the goal, Miller fired a shot past Gettysburg goalie Katherine Corkhill and into the far side of the goal.
For the Blue Jays sophomore Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) made a season-high nine saves to earn the win. For the Bullets, Corkhill made six saves.
Hopkins returns to action on Sunday, September 23 when Washington & Lee visits Homewood Field for a 1:00 pm match up.
