WESTMINSTER, MD - The 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team defeated McDaniel 3-1 on Wednesday afternoon in Centennial Conference action. For the Blue Jays (15-2, 8-1 CC) it is their first win in Westminster since October 17, 2001. The Green Terror falls to 7-10 overall and 4-5 in the conference with the loss.
Senior Adair Landy (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) put Hopkins on top first when she tipped in a pass from junior Brittany Bland (Littleton, CO/Colorado Academy) at 20:57. It would take nearly 30 minutes for the Blue Jays to strike again as Bland banged home a rebound at 49:26.
Junior Andrea Vandersall (Hampton, NH/Winnacunnet) pushed Hopkins' lead to 3-0 just over five minutes later after collecting a loose ball and shooting through the goalie's legs. Kristin Mele ended junior Sophia Tieu's (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) shutout bid at 64:59. Mele tapped the ball past Tieu off a long hit by Amanda Pickard.
With her goal, Landy now has 93 career points, moving her into third place in Hopkins history. Tieu finished with two saves in the win for the Blue Jays. For the Green Terror, Erika Wawzyanick made four saves in the cage.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 1 as Ursinus visits Baltimore for a Centennial Conference showdown. The match is scheduled to begin at 5 pm. The winner will host the Centennial Conference Tournament as the #1 seed.
