ST. LOUIS, MO - Up three points with less than two minutes to play, the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team couldn't hold on as Whittier assembled a nine-point run to slide past the Blue Jays, 72-66. Whittier improves to 3-1 as Hopkins falls to 1-4 on the season. Senior Kristin Phillips (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) earned all-tournament team honors with her double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.
Senior guard Caitlin Sloane (Baltimore, MD/St. Paul's) hit two 3-pointers in the first three minutes of the game to start Hopkins off. Junior Anastasia Wynn (Reisterstown, MD/McDonough) scored 11 of her 14 points in 12 first-half minutes, sending the Blue Jays into the locker room with a three-point deficit, 40-37.
Phillips tied it at 52 with 11:07 to play after sinking back-to-back free throws. The Poets took a 57-53 lead before Phillips hit another free throw. After another Whittier jumper, junior Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) hit a layup and was fouled. Lonesome completed the three-point play to cut the Poet lead to three at 59-56.
Freshman Gena Upshaw (Greensboro, NC/Forsyth County Day) hit two free throws at 6:32 to bring the Blue Jays within one, 59-58, with the first points of her career. Senior co-captain Jenna Berninger hit a layup on the next trip up the court to give Hopkins its first lead since 12:49 in the first half, 60-59, at 5:53.
After two free throws by Whittier, Upshaw scored a layup to take back the lead at 62-61. Phillips hit the next free throw before the Poets hit two foul shots after a Katie Biggart (Darien, CT/Darien) foul. It was Phillips again with a layup at the three-minute mark to gain a 65-63 lead. Wynn landed a free throw for a three-point lead.
Whittier took over at 1:41 to score the final nine points for the 72-66 victory.
Wynn scored a season-high 14 points and grabbed six rebounds, while Sloane and Lonesome each had eight. Lonesome's eight points were also a season-high.
The Blue Jays return to action on Tuesday, December 2 at 7 p.m., opening their Centennial Conference schedule hosting Franklin & Marshall.
