WESTMINSTER, MD - A 33 year-old rivalry heated up at the Gill Athletic Center on Thursday in Westminster, MD as the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team battled the Green Terror of McDaniel to the final seconds, falling just short in a 67-66 loss. McDaniel takes a 34-29 all-time series advantage with the victory and improves to 9-6 (7-3 Centennial). The Blue Jays slip to 6-9 (4-4 Centennial) on the season.
Down 20-14 with 9:07 remaining in the first half, head coach Nancy Funk called a timeout. Out of the huddle, junior Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) drained a 3-pointer and Siobhan Callanan followed with a jumper from the corner to make it 20-19. The Blue Jays took their first lead of the game at 6:13 after a Lyndsay Burton (North Valley, NJ/West Morris) jumper, 21-20. McDaniel regained the upper hand on two free throws by Whitney Snoops at 6:08. Burton hit a shot in the paint as Ali Moreland came back down the court, notching a layup to make it 25-24. Two free throws by Sally Grace would put the Green Terror up 37-30 to end the first half.
Out of the locker room, the Green Terror went on an 8-2 run to open the half. McDaniel would lead by as much as 16 points in the second half, up 54-38 with 13:21 to play.
Senior Kristin Phillips got Hopkins going with a 3-pointer at 12:11 and junior Steph Kielb knocked down a 10-footer to bring the Blue Jays within nine. After McDaniel battled back to another 13-point advantage, Phillips sunk a 3-pointer to pull the Blue Jays within 10, 60-50 at 7:57. Burton cut the lead to eight points just forty seconds later.
It was McDaniel again, stretching its lead to 13 after a three-point play by Snoops.
With 5:21 remaining, Burton connected on a jumper in the paint to make it 65-54. Junior Anastasia Wynn grabbed the defensive rebound after a missed jumper by Ali Moreland and brought the ball up the floor, burying a 3-pointer at 4:45.
Hopkins forced the Green Terror into a turnover and Wynn came up with the steal. Lonesome gathered the offensive board after a Hopkins miss, kicking it out to Wynn beyond the arc for another 3-pointer, putting the Blue Jays within five, 65-60, at 3:53.
Wynn followed up with two free throws after a Green Terror turnover and foul, capping an 8-0 run of her own cutting the lead to three.
Lauren Wyble hit a jumper at 2:09 to put the Green Terror back up five. Burton answered with a layup at 1:49.
Wynn capitalized on another McDaniel turnover to put Hopkins one point away with just 59 seconds remaining. Two missed jumpers in the final 15 seconds gave the Green Terror the win.
Leading the Blue Jays with her fourth straight 20-point contest was sophomore Lyndsay Burton, adding 23 points and five rebounds for Hopkins. Senior Kristin Phillips tallied 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the defeat. Phillips also had a team-high four steals. Junior Anastasia Wynn finished with 14 points, 12 of which coming in the second half.
Hopkins will travel to Carlisle, PA on Saturday, January 24 for the second leg of its two-game road trip. The Centennial Conference matchup is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tilt at Dickinson.
