ORLANDO, FL - A 17-2 run late in the first half keyed a 16-point victory over Goucher for the Johns Hopkins women's basketball team. Three Blue Jays scored in double-figures as they improve to 2-7 on the season as Goucher moves to 4-5 on the year.
Down 17-16 with 5:27 to play in the first half, the Blue Jays assembled a 17-2 run fueled by junior Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic). She had 10 points in the spree, including two 3-pointers. JHU hit the locker room with a 33-19 lead.
Hopkins led by as many as 18 points in the second half and never surrendered. Goucher cut the advantage to 10 at 12:21, but couldn't get any closer as JHU hit 13 free throws to stay on top.
Senior Kristin Phillips (Wilmington, DE/Tower Hill) scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor to keep Hopkins on top. The Blue Jays didn't let up in the second stanza, producing their second win of the season and now leads the all-time series with Goucher, 19-2.
JHU capitalized on 21 Gopher turnovers for 23 points. The Blue Jays contributed 16 bench points in the first half.
Phillips finished with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Anastasia Wynn (Baltimore, MD/McDonough) had 13 points and six rebounds, while Lonesome finished with 12 points, all coming in the first half. Junior Monica Mitchell (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg) pulled down 10 rebounds to go with six points and two blocks. Mitchell finished with double-digit rebounds for the second consecutive game. Freshman Chantel Mattiola (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) also had six assists and three steals.
The Blue Jays resume Centennial Conference action back in Baltimore on Tuesday, January 7. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m.
