CARLISLE, PA - Sophomore Tim McCarty scored a team-high 12 points and visiting Johns Hopkins used a 22-9 run over an 11-minute span in the second half as the Blue Jays knocked off host Dickinson, 66-53, in Centennial Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon. The Blue Jays improve to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference with the win, while the Red Devils slip to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in the Centennial.
The Red Devils trailed just 32-27 one minute into the second half after a Matt Dolan jumper, but a layup by junior Mike Henrici and a conventional three-point play by senior Andrew Farber-Miller ignited the decisive run for Johns Hopkins, which built its lead to 54-36 with the spree. Freshman Mike Rhoads and sophomore Sean O'Connor added three pointers to fuel the run, which was capped by a triple from Danny Gergen with 8:40 remaining in regulation.
Back-to-back layups by Dolan and Trevor Kenny halted the run, but the Devils would get no closer than 11 down the stretch as the Blue Jays made five straight free throws at one point to seal their eighth straight win at Dickinson and 10th straight win overall against the Devils.
Neither team led by more than three over the first 11 minutes of the game before the Blue Jays created some separation with a pair of free throws by Rhoads and a jumper by O'Connor to extend a 12-10 lead to 16-10. The Devils drew within two a short time later and were down just 22-19 three minutes before halftime before a jumper by Henrici ignited an 8-4 half-ending run by the Blue Jays that accounted for a 30-23 JHU lead at the half. Dolan's jumper 78 seconds into the second half made it a five-point game, but Henrici's layup followed shortly after and the Blue Jays never looked back.
McCarty's 12 points were a season-high and he was one of seven different Johns Hopkins players who scored six or more points in the victory. Farber-Miller added nine points and nine rebounds and the Blue Jays dominated on the glass as they held a 42-29 rebounding advantage.
Chris Harrington led Dickinson with a game-high 16 points and three other players, including Dolan, scored 10 points, but the Devils hit just 19-of-56 (.339) shots from the floor and couldn't overcome the Blue Jays' rebounding advantage in dropping their sixth straight to open the season.
