BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's swim team defeated visiting Washington & Lee on Saturday, 156-97 to snap the Generals four-meet win streak. The Blue Jays even their dual meet record to 4-4 on the season, while the Generals slip to 9-6 overall. Freshman Annie Tsay (Sacramento, CA/Mira Loma) was the highlight of the meet winning three individual events and one relay.
Hopkins opened with a win in the 200 Medley Relay, by the narrowest of margins. The team of freshman Lindsey Kent (West Bend, WI/Homestead), Tsay, senior Jackie Rooney (Ft. Lauderdale, FL/The Culver Academies) and junior Katie Vance (Apple Valley, MN/Apple Valley) finished in 1:54.20, edging out the W&L team by .01 of a second.
The Blue Jays then swept the top three spots in the 1000 Free, with freshman Heidi Culver (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain) taking the win in 10:43.76. Sophomore Kathleen Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) took second (10:52.79), with sophomore MaryClaire Kozlowski (Fairfax, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) taking third (10:58.04). Hopkins followed that with a sweep of the top three spots in the 200 Free, with freshman Khristine Ghemigian (Oak Park, CA/Oak Park) leading the way with a time of 1:57.13. Freshman Meaghan Bresnahan (Lighthouse Point, FL/Cardinal Gibbons) took second in 1:59.47 while senior Megan Zepp (Montgomery Village, MD/Stone Ridge) took third in 2:00.51.
In the 100 Back, Hopkins finished in second, third and fourth. Freshman Margaret Spach (Laguna Niguel, CA/Aliso Niguel) finished in 1:01.68 to take second. Freshman Tiffany Tembreull (Lino Lakes, MN/Circle Pines) took third (1:01.77) while junior Caitlin Dennis (Moorsetown, NJ/Merion Mercy Academy) took fourth (1:02.96). Tsay then picked up her first individual win of the meet, taking the 100 Breast in 1:07.42, an NCAA B qualifying time. Bresnahan claimed second with a time of 1:09.56.
Hopkins then swept the top three spots in the next three events, the 200 Fly, the 50 Free and the 100 Free. Sophomore Michele Palopoli (Gwynedd Valley, PA/Germantown Academy) won the 200 Fly in 2:12.97. Sophomore Meagan Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) took second (2:13.15) with her sister Kathleen finishing in third (2:17.93). In the 50 Free, Tsay added another win, finishing in first with a time of 25.21. Rooney followed in second (25.68) with Vance in third (25.81). Freshman Elizabeth Rogers (North Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) won the 100 Free in a time of 54.73. Vance followed in second (56.52), while Zepp took third (56.86).
Culver picked up her second win of the day, taking first in the 200 Back with a time of 2:10.45. Tsay then won her third individual event of the meet, taking first in the 200 Breast in 2:25.50, besting her career best by 7.55 seconds. Her time was also an NCAA B time. Dennis took second with a time of 2:26.61, also an NCAA B time. Hopkins again swept the top three spots of an event, taking first-second-third in the 500 Free. Senior Elissa Stautner (Conroe, TX/Oak Ridge) led the way with a time of 5:14.45, a season-best time. Spach followed in second (5:21.93) with Kathleen Heslin taking third (5:24.02). Hopkins swam exhibitions for the final three events.
Hopkins returns to action with the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship February 11-14 in Charlotte, NC. The Blue Jays will look to win their fourth straight Bluegrass Mountain title.
