BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins football team recently had three players named to the National Football Foundation's Hampshire Honor Society. Greg Chimera (Gaithersburg, MD/Quince Orchard), Austin Ehrhart (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) and Matt Hintz (Erie, PA/Eric Cathedral Prep), who earned their degrees on May 21, were all named to the team. The Hampshire Honor Society is in its third year as it was first presented in 2007 (for players who completed their eligibility in 2006).
To be selected to the team individuals must carry a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2 (on a 4.0 scale), have completed their final year of eligibility and be a starter or significant reserve. A total of 564 players representing 266 schools were selected.
Chimera was a three-year regular at fullback for the Blue Jays and played in all 11 games with nine starts as a senior in 2008. Chimera graduated with a degree in psychology and a minor in entrepreneurship and management. He served as the primary lead blocker for Andrew Kase last season as Kase set JHU single-season and career marks for rushing yards. Chimera was also a standout on special teams as his three tackles on punt returns were tied for the team lead. He also totaled two receptions for 30 yards as a senior.
Ehrhart played in seven games with five starts at strong safety as a senior. He totaled 17 tackles on the year, including a career-high five in a win at Gettysburg. Ehrhart earned a degree in economics and political science and was named to the 2008 Centennial Conference Football Academic Honor Roll.
Hintz played in eight games as a reserve offensive lineman as a senior and helped pave the way for an offense that averaged 26.1 points and 378 yards of total offense. He graduated with a degree in natural science.
The selection of Chimera, Ehrhart and Hintz raise the total number of Johns Hopkins football players named to the honor society to seven. Brian Nickel was JHU's only selection on the inaugural team, while Scott Meyers, Zach Rosswog and Corey Sattler were named last year.
