LEXINGTON, VA - The 11th-ranked Johns Hopkins field hockey team got two first half goals in a 2-0 win over Washington & Lee Friday night. The win was the third consecutive shutout for the Blue Jays as they remain unbeaten on the season at 3-0. The Generals, playing in their season-opener, fall to 0-1.
Senior Gabi Henn (Lambertville, NJ/South Hunterdon) scored the game's opening goal just 13:18 in to put the visitors on the board first. Henn collected a pass from senior Andrea Vandersall (Hampton, NH/Winnacunnet) and slipped it past Generals' goalie Caroline Habliston for what proved to be the game-winner. Just over five minutes later, freshman Meghan Kellett (Audubon, PA/Villa Maria Academy) pushed the Blue Jays lead to 2-0 when she scored her first career goal.
Senior goalie Sophia Tieu (Cupertino, CA/Cupertino) finished with four saves in posting her first shutout of the season and the eighth of her career. Habliston made seven stops in the loss for the Generals. Hopkins held the edge over Washington & Lee in shots (15-7) and penalty corners (9-4).
Hopkins returns to action at W&L Turf Field on Saturday as the Blue Jays take on Eastern Mennonite. Game time is slated for 1:30 pm.
