FREDERICK, Md.--The Johns Hopkins volleyball team defeated Hood in a 3-1 decision Tuesday night to improve to, 6-1.
In the first set, the Blue Jays jumped out to a 9-1 lead on the strength of kills by five different players. Consecutive service aces for the Blazers narrowed the gap to 17-7, but the Blue Jays outscored Hood 8-4 the rest of the way and won the first set on a kill by Sarah Feicht (Austin, TX).
In the second set the Blue Jays again built an early lead, but Hood rallied from seven points down to eventually even the score at 18-18. Three straight hitting errors by JHU pushed the Blazer lead to 23-20. After a few more exchanges, a kill by Allison Cappelaere (Ellicott City, MD) inched the Blue Jays closer (23-24), but JHU would ultimately lose the set (23-25).
Hopkins doubled up the Blazers to start the third set, using a Becky Paynter (Columbia, MD) ace to go up 12-6. Hood would not get closer than five the rest of the frame as the Blue Jays took a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Blue Jays continued their strong play in the fourth set and, after recording 16 kills to just two errors in the set, closed out the match with a 25-12 win. Hopkins was led by Alex Zenoff (San Francisco, CA), who posted a match-high 13 kills while Paynter recorded a career-high 40 assists.
Hopkins returns to action on Friday, September 18 when it travels to New Paltz, NY to face SUNY New Paltz.
