BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team was defeated by the Dickinson Red Devils, 51-49, in Centennial Conference action at Goldfarb Gym. Junior Carole Dempsey of the Red Devils led all scorers in the game with 18 points. With the loss the Blue Jays fall to 7-7 overall and 5-5 in the Centennial. The Red Devils improve to 10-4 overall and 6-4 in the conference.
There were eight lead changes and four ties in the first half. Johns Hopkins held the biggest led of the half after senior Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) drained a 3-pointer at 15:36 to put the Blue Jays ahead by a score of 10-5.
The two teams fought for the remainder of the half with Dickinson taking the lead, 28-27, for their fifth time with 1:22 remaining on a lay-up by Dempsey assisted by senior Brooke Muller. Dickinson's lead would grow to 31-27 when the horn sounded.
Lonesome was 2-3 from 3-point range and scored 10 of her 14 points in the first half.
The Red Devil lead grew to 10 points in first two minutes of the second half thanks to two field goals by Dempsey and two free throws by freshman Lindsay Finnerty. This would be the biggest lead of the day for Dickinson.
The Blue Jays slowly clawed their way back into the game and found themselves down by three with 1:31 left in the game after a layup by junior Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) to put the score at 49-46.
Dempsey made two free throws to put Dickinson up 51-46 with just over a minute to play. Sophomore Chantel Mattiola (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) answered by sinking a 3-pointer with 46 seconds left in the game to put the Blue Jays down by 2 points.
Dickinson missed a shot with 15 seconds on the clock but Dempsey grabbed the rebound for the Red Devils. Dickinson was then able to run 11 seconds off the clock before Hopkins could foul to stop the clock.
Dickinson missed both of it free throws giving the Blue Jays an opportunity with five seconds left in the game and down 51-49. The Blue Jays could not get a shot off in these five seconds because of a tight Dickinson defense.
Burton led the Blue Jays with 16 points while shooting 8-10 from the floor. Lonesome added 14 points of her own for Hopkins.
Junior Alesha Sisco scored 14 points for Dickinson, finish only behind Dempsey's 18 points.
The Blue Jays return to action on January 20 when they travel to Washington to face the Shorewomen. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
