CHESTERTOWN, MD - Johns Hopkins got 22 points from senior forward Andrew Farber-Miller, but it wasn't enough in a 68-48 loss at Washington College Wednesday night. The Blue Jays see their three-game win streak snapped and fall to 8-7 overall and 4-4 in the Centennial Conference. The Shoremen win their fourth straight and improve to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
Washington College broke open a tight game early in the second half with a 14-0 run to turn a one-point deficit into a 13-point lead with 12:32 to play. The Shoremen forced six Blue Jay turnovers during the run, turning them into seven points. Farber-Miller converted an old-fashioned three-point play to stem the tide and end a Hopkins' scoreless drought of over four and a half minutes. After a James Whall layup pushed the lead back to 12, senior Pat O'Connell (Baltimore, MD/Loyola Blakefield) converted a three-point play of his own and sophomore Tim McCarty (Warrington, PA/Germantown Academy) followed with a layup and the deficit was down to nine with 10:30 to play.
Mark DeBoy answered with a triple for Washington College, igniting an 11-1 run, that saw the Shoremen push out to a 54-37 lead with 5:42 to play. A three-pointer from freshman Mike Rhoads (Huntingdon Valley, PA/Chestnut Hill Academy) cut it back to a 14-point game, but that would be as close as the Blue Jays would get over the closing minutes as the Shoremen would go on to win by 20 points.
Hopkins jumped out to an 8-3 lead before Andrew Chambers began lighting it up from downtown for Washington College. He hit triples on three consecutive possessions helping the Shoremen to an 18-10 lead midway through the first half. It was Farber-Miller's turn to take over, as he scored eight straight points for the Blue Jays as they rallied to 24-21 lead with just 1:37 to play, capped off by five straight points from Rhoads. A Kevin Breslin put-back at the buzzer made it just a one-point game at the break.
Farber-Miller's 22 points were a game-high and season-high as he went 10-of-13 from the floor and 2-of-2 from the line. He also grabbed eight rebounds. Rhoads was the only other Blue Jay to finish in double digits, chipping in 11 points, while also grabbing two steals. Chambers led the Shoremen with 20 points, with 14 of those coming in the first half, while also pulling down eight boards. Breslin and Sal Schittino also finished in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Hopkins shot just 36.7 percent from the floor, while turning the ball over 21 times. The Shoremen shot 44.1 percent from the floor, including 42.9 percent (6-of-14) from three-point range, and turned the ball over just 10 times. It was the Blue Jays worst loss to the Shoremen in nearly 22 years - to the day. Washington College defeated visiting Johns Hopkins 84-55 on January 19, 1988.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, January 23 as the Blue Jays travel to Allentown, PA to wrap up the season series with Muhlenberg. Game time is slated for 2:00 pm at Memorial Hall.
