BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team defeated Bryn Mawr, 77-50, at Goldfarb Gym. Senior Leslie Markun (Mill Valley, CA/The Branson School) drained a career-high 12 points. With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 9-7 overall and 7-5 in the Centennial Conference. The Owls fall to 2-14 overall and 0-12 in the conference.
The Blue Jays jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first nine and a half minutes of the game. Sophomore Chantel Mattiola (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) capped the 12-point lead with a made jumper.
Bryn then scored the next nine points to cut the Blue Jay lead to 3 at 16-13 with 8:19 remaining in the first half. Junior Emilie Naccarato capped the run with a layup followed by a 3-pointer.
Hopkins answered by scoring nine-straight points of their own and eventually taking a 37-25 lead at the half.
Naccarato scored 16 of her 19 total points in the first half for Bryn Mawr.
The Blue Jays dominated the second half scoring 40 points. The largest lead was 35 points, 77-42, held at 3:36 after a layup by freshman Alex Vassila (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill).
Naccarato led all scorers on the day with her 19 points. Sophomore Lindsey Darvin also added 15 points for the Owls.
Vassila led the Blue Jays with 14 points. Markun scored a career-high 12 points by shooting 5-for-5 from the floor and 2-for-2 from 3-point range. Senior Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) added 11 points for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins shot 29-for-61 (.475) from the floor while Bryn Mawr was 14-for-41 (.341).
The Blue Jays return to action on January 27 when they host the Diplomats of Franklin & Marshall. Game time is set for 6:00 pm.
