TOWSON, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's swimming team kicked off its weekend at Towson on Friday afternoon. The Tigers defeated the visiting Blue Jays, 158-95. Hopkins wraps up its dual-meet schedule on Saturday at Washington & Lee.
Hopkins opened with a third place finish in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:52.99. Sophomores Margaret Spach (Niguel, CA/Aliso Niguel), Annie Tsay (Sacramento, CA/Mira Loma), Eleanor Gardner (Smiths, Bermuda/Bermuda) and Elizabeth Rogers (North Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) swam the relay for the Blue Jays. Hopkins then finished third through sixth in the 1000 Free. Freshman Cathy Howard (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) led the way for the Blue Jays, clocking in at 10:56.29. Sophomore Heidi Culver (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain) followed in fourth with a time of 11:08.79, a season-best. Junior Mary Claire Kozlowski (Fairfax Station, VA/Lake Braddock Secondary) took fifth in 11:13.94, while junior Kathleen Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) took sixth in 11:18.45.
Rogers picked up a third-place finish in the 200 Free, finishing in 1:57.82, a season-best time. Freshman Daniela Villegas (Bellflower, CA/Cerritos) and sophomore Lindsey Kent (West Bend, WI/Homestead) then took third and fourth, respectively in the 100 Back. Villegas clocked in a 1:02.45, with Kent following with a time of 1:03.18. Tsay swam a time of 1:07.52, an NCAA B qualifying time, to take third place in the 100 Breast.
In the 200 Fly, Hopkins took fifth through seventh. Junior Meagan Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) led the way for the Blue Jays with a time of 2:14.10, a season-best time. Junior Michele Palopoli (Gwynedd Valley, PA/Germantown Academy) claimed sixth with a time of 2:16.04, while Nicole Wain (Basking Ridge, NJ/Ridge) took seventh in 2:23.78. In the 50 Free, sophomore Khristine Ghemigian (Oak Park, CA/Oak Park) led the way for Hopkins with a fifth place finish clocking in at 25.64, a season-best. Gardner followed in sixth place with a time of 25.70.
Rogers followed with another third place finish, this time in the 100 Free, finishing in a season-best 54.06. Culver then finished in fourth in the 200 Back with a time of 2:12.05. Tsay then took second in the 200 Breast, clocking in 2:28.24. Howard, Culver and Kathleen Heslin then took second, third and fourth in the 500 Free. Howard finished in 5:17.28, followed by Culver (5:27.87) and Heslin (5:35.24). Towson swam exhibitions for the remainder of the meet.
