LEXINGTON, VA - The Johns Hopkins women's swimming team wrapped up the dual meet portion of its schedule on a snowy Saturday morning at Washington & Lee, picking up a 161-95 win. The Blue Jays pull their record to 4-6 as they have just two meets remaining the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship and the NCAA Championship.
Hopkins opened up with a win in the 200 Medley Relay, clocking in at 1:52.73. Sophomores Lindsey Kent (West Bend, WI/Homestead), Annie Tsay (Sacramento, CA/Mira Loma), Khristine Ghemigian (Oak Park, CA/Oak Park) and Elizabeth Rogers (North Palm Beach, FL/Suncoast) swam the winning relay. Freshman Cathy Howard (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill) and junior Kathleen Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) then combined to finish first and third in the 1000 Free. Howard won the event, finishing in 10:56.76 with Heslin coming in at 11:08.25.
The Blue Jays then picked up 16 points in the 200 Free as they swept the top three spots. Freshman Kristen Ferriero (Long Valley, NJ/Pope John XXIII) took the win with a time of 2:00.30. She was followed in second place by Ghemigian with a time of 2:00.64 and sophomore Heidi Culver (Lakewood, CO/Green Mountain) in third in 2:02.02. Hopkins followed that up by taking three of the top four spots in the 100 Back, picking up 14 points. Freshman Daniela Villegas (Bellflower, CA/Cerritos) won the event, finishing in 1:01.49. Kent claimed third with a time of 1:03.20 and senior Robin Schaffer (Dublin, OH/Columbus School for Girls) finished in fourth in 1:03.64.
Tsay then won the 100 Breast, while senior Caitlin Dennis (Moorsetown, NJ/Merion Mercy Academy) took third. Tsay clocked in at 1:06.85, an NCAA B qualifying time and Dennis finished in 1:10.47. In the 200 Fly, Hopkins swept the top two spots thanks to juniors Meagan Heslin (Wyckoff, NJ/Northern Highlands Regional) and Michele Palopoli (Gwynedd Valley, PA/Germantown Academy). Heslin took the win with a time of 2:15.28, while Palopoli followed with a time of 2:16.97.
Hopkins took the top two spots in the 50 Free with Rogers taking the win in 24.94. Freshman Eleanor Gardner (Smiths, Bermuda/Bermuda) followed in second place with a time of 25.46. The Blue Jays then swept the top three spots in the 100 Free, this time with Gardner picking up the win. She clocked in at 54.23, with Ferriero finishing in second (55.82) and Villegas in third (55.84). In the 200 Back, Culver and Schaffer took first and third, respectively. Culver finished in 2:12.96, while Schaffer touched the wall at 2:17.29.
Tsay completed her sweep of the Breast events, winning the 200 Breast with a time of 2:28.76. While Howard swept the distance events, winning the 500 Free in 5:21.21. Kathleen Heslin finished in second with a time of 5:27.06. Rogers led a contingent of Blue Jays that claimed three of the top four spots in the 100 Fly. Rogers took the win, touching the wall at 1:01.26, while Dennis took second (1:01.34) and Meagan Heslin took fourth (1:04.23). Hopkins swam exhibitions in the final two events.
Hopkins will now be idle for two and a half weeks as it prepares for the Bluegrass Mountain Conference Championship. The championship is scheduled for February 17-20 and will take place in Charlotte, NC.
