BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team defeated Bryn Mawr, 55-37, at Goldfarb Gym to break their three-game losing streak. Junior Lyndsay Burton (Long Valley, NJ/West Morris Central) led the Blue Jays with 14 points in the game. With the win, the Blue Jays improve to 5-5 overall and 3-3 in the Centennial Conference. The Owls fall to 1-9 overall and 0-7 in the conference.
The Blue Jays scored first on a jumper by senior Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) and never trailed for the entire length of the game. There were three ties, all of which took place in the first half.
Hopkins led 12-9 with 11:11 left in the first half. The Blue Jays finished out the half on an 18-3 run to take a 30-12 lead at halftime. The run was capped by a layup by senior Monica Mitchell (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg) with 31 seconds left in the half.
Both teams scored 25 second half points. The Blue Jays obtained their biggest lead with 12:26 remaining on the clock after a layup by Burton. The Owls would never get closer than down by 16 throughout the second half.
Sophomore Lindsey Darvin of Bryn Mawr led all scorers in the game with 16 total points. Owls senior Shanika Bridges-King also 12 points. Senior Caroline Heffernan led the Owls in rebounding with 10.
Burton led the Blue Jays with 14 points. Senior Leslie Markun (Mill Valley, CA/The Branson School) set her career high point total with 10 points. Markun was 4-6 from the floor and 2-3 from the 3-point line. Senior Monica Mitchell (Reynoldsburg, OH/Reynoldsburg) grabbed nine rebounds for the Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays return to action on Saturday, January 9 when they travel to Allentown, PA to play #16 Muhlenberg. Game time is slated for 4:00 pm.
