OWINGS MILLS, MD - McDaniel shot 49.0 percent from the field en route to a 62-40 win over Johns Hopkins in the fifth-place game of the Pride of Maryland Championship. The Blue Jays slip to 1-2 on the season while the Green Terror improve to 2-1 in their biggest win in the series since 1983. Junior Tim McCarty was named to the all-tournament team for the Blue Jays.
Hopkins led early after a pair of free throws from senior Mike Henrici gave the Blue Jays a 6-5 lead at 14:58. But Kevin Henry came right back with a jumper to swing the lead back in McDaniel's favor and jump starting a 9-0 run as the Green Terror took the lead for good. Woody Butler made it a three-point game, followed by a pair of buckets from Devon Lesniak to stake McDaniel to a 14-6 lead. An Aleksandar Nikolic jumper and a free throw from freshman Matt Kelly cut the deficit to five with 10:38 to play.
But the Green Terror answered and once again led by nine with 11:20 to play. Kelly and sophomore Mike Rhoads combined to make it a five-point game at 5:53. That would be as close as the Blue Jays would get as the Green Terror closed the first half on a 10-2 run to take a 30-17 lead into the lockerroom.
McDaniel picked up where it left off to start to the second, opening the stanza on a 14-0 run to push out to a 44-17 lead with more than 12 minutes to play in the game. McCarty put up four straight points to help Hopkins start to get back into the game as the Blue Jays slowly chipped away at the deficit. A three-pointer from freshman Jaraad Rogers followed by a Nikolic layup made it an 18-point game with 3:56 to play. But Hopkins could get no closer as McDaniel took the 62-40 win to claim fifth place in the tournament.
Hopkins was led by McCarty and Nikolic, who each finished with eight points. The 40 points for Hopkins are the fewest since a 56-40 loss at Widener on February 14, 1987. Lesniak had a game-high 13 points for the Green Terror.
Hopkins returns to action and opens Centennial Conference play on Tuesday, November 23 at Haverford. Tip-off is set for 8:00 pm.
