GETTYSBURG, PA - Gettysburg shot 64.6 percent from the field as the host Bullets defeated Johns Hopkins, 73-57, on Wednesday night in Centennial Conference action. It marks the third straight game in the series between the two that the Bullets have shot better than 63.0 percent from the floor. Hopkins loses its third straight and falls to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the conference. Gettysburg meanwhile, wins its third straight and improve to 4-1 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial.
Hopkins led by three with just over four minutes to play in the opening half after back-to-back threes from sophomores Peter Scanlon and Mike Rhoads. A pair of Stephen Poarch layups, sandwiched around a free throw from junior Tim McCarty, tied the game at 28-28 with 2:00 on the clock. Following a Hopkins timeout, Gettysburg put up seven straight points capped off by a three from Kevin Kennedy with two ticks on the clock as the Bullets took a 35-28 lead into the half.
Gettysburg picked up where it left off at the end of the first. The Bullets scored the first eight points of the second stanza, punctuated by a three-pointer from Alex Zurn, to push out to a 43-28 lead. Zurn's triple at 17:52 capped a 19-1 Bullet run that spanned half time. Hopkins finally got on the board in the second, courtesy of a John Alberici jumper in the paint to end a Blue Jay scoreless streak of 6:47. The two teams traded buckets over the next 90 seconds as Hopkins cut the deficit to 12 on an Adam Spengler bucket.
The Bullets responded with a 15-3 run to stake themselves to a 64-40 lead with 9:09 on the clock. Zurn fueled the run with a pair of buckets from downtown. Gettysburg maintained its lead 20-point lead until late when Hopkins scored the final six points of the game, all from freshman Aleksandar Nikolic, to account for the 73-57 final.
Senior Mike Henrici and Spengler led the Blue Jays with 10 points apiece, while Nikolic had a career-high-tying eight points. Zurn led four Bullets in double figures with a game-high 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for a double-double. The Blue Jays held All-American Andrew Powers to just 12 points, though the forward did reach the 1,500 point milestone at 15:55 in the first half.
Hopkins shot 42.0 percent from the floor, including 46.2 percent from downtown, and 81.8 percent from the charity stripe. But the Blue Jays couldn't keep up with the Bullets hot shooting as the hosts shot 64.6 percent for the game, including 66.7 percent in the second half. Gettysburg was 50.0 percent from downtown, though just 36.4 percent from the charity stripe. Gettysburg also won the battle of the boards, outrebounding Hopkins 29-23.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, December 4 as the Blue Jays host Dickinson in Centennial Conference action. Tip off for the Blue Jays' home opener is slated for 3:00 pm.
