BALTIMORE, MD - The Johns Hopkins women's basketball team was defeated by Dickinson, 64-44, in the first round of the Centennial Conference Tournament. Junior Alesha Sisco of Dickinson lead all scorers in the game with 25 points. Sisco added 13 rebounds for the double-double and had seven steals as well. The Blue Jays end their season with a record of 15-10 while Dickinson improves to 17-8 and will play Muhlenberg on Saturday in the semifinals of the conference tournament.
The score changed hands three times in the first 10 minutes of the game. Freshman Belma Mekic put the Red Devils on top, 10-8, at 11:56. Dickinson then went on a 13-3 run which put them ahead, 27-13, with 6:14 remaining in the first half. Freshman Lindsay Finnerty capped the run with a layup.
The Blue Jays cut their deficit to eight at 27-19 on a layup by sophomore Chantel Mattiola (Trappe, PA/Perkiomen Valley) with 3:46 to play in the first stanza. Dickinson, however, would increase its lead to 13 points on a 3-pointer by senior Brooke Muller. Dickinson held a 32-19 lead at halftime.
Dickinson held off the Blue Jays in the second half. Freshman Alex Vassila (Potomac, MD/Winston Churchill) sank a layup at 14:34 to make the score 29-36. Dickinson shut the door here and built its lead to 21 points, 57-36, at 6:27. The final horn sounded with Dickinson ahead, 64-44.
Sisco recorded the double-double for the Red Devils with 25 points and 13 rebounds. The junior also had 7 steals in the game. Muller added 16 points for Dickinson while junior Carol Dempsey sank eight points. The Red Devils shot 24-for-51 (.471) in the game.
Senior Britni Lonesome (Baltimore, MD/Baltimore Polytechnic) led the Blue Jays with 12 points while Vassila added 10 points. The Blue Jays shot 16-for-53 (.302) from the floor in the game.
Dickinson will play Muhlenberg on Saturday in the semifinals. Game time is set for 2:00 pm.
