PRINCETON, NJ - The Johns Hopkins water polo team traveled to Princeton, NJ last week for the annual Princeton Invitational. The Blue Jays had a tough outing, coming away with just one win in four matches. Hopkins falls to 4-4 on the season as it prepares for the ECAC Championship this coming weekend.
Hopkins opened with an 8-3 win over Iona for the Blue Jays sixth straight win over the Gaels. The Blue Jays' defense stole the show as the Gaels were held to no goals for nearly 18 minutes to end the match. The offense was led by sophomore Alex Whittam (Hillsborough, CA/Sacred Heart Prep), with his first hat trick of the season, and sophomore Ross Schofield (Greenwich, CT/Greenwich), who tallied a pair of goals.
Hopkins ran into a tough Cal Baptist team, ranked 17th in the nation, falling 11-6 to the Lancers. Senior John Barrett (Clarendon Hills, IL/Fenwick) and Whittam led the Blue Jays with a pair of goals each, while senior goalie Jeremy Selbst (Old Greenwich, CT/Greenwich) made a season-high 13 saves. The Blue Jays led 4-3 at the half, but the Lancers came out firing after the break and outscored the Jays 8-2 over the final 16 minutes.
On Saturday morning, Hopkins nearly pulled off the upset of the 13th-ranked Santa Clara Broncos, but fell short in an 11-8 loss. Hopkins got goals from seven different players, led by Schofield's two goals, while Selbst had another solid outing with 12 saves. But Hopkins couldn't convert its man-up opportunities, going just 4-of-13 in six-on-five situations. In the nightcap, Hopkins dropped a tough 8-5 decision to the Fordham Rams, whom the Blue Jays had edged 11-10 the week before at the Navy Open. The match was tied at 4-4 after one quarter, but the Blue Jay offense stalled after that, scoring just once in the final three quarters. Schofield led the way against for Hopkins, notching his first hat trick of the season.
Hopkins returns to action September 18-19 at the 2010 ECAC Championship hosted by Harvard University. JHU earned the fourth seed and a first round bye. Hopkins will open play at the championship on Saturday at 1:00 pm against the winner of the Brown-Washington & Jefferson match.
