SALISBURY, MD - The sixth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team needed more than 48 minutes to find the back of the net against Fredonia State in the Blue Jays' season-opener on Saturday. From there, the Blue Jays needed less than five minutes to score three times as JHU opened the 2010 season with a 5-0 victory over the Blue Devils at Salisbury University Saturday afternoon.
Hopkins built a 14-5 advantage in shots through the first 45 minutes, but couldn't solve Fredonia goalie Kaylaigh Forger. The Blue Jays kept the pressure on early in the second half and netted the first goal of the game in the 49th minute when senior Erin Stafford slid home what proved to be the game-winner off an assist from Sara Tankard. Junior Leslie O'Brien scored a short time later off an assist from classmate Erica Suter and Tankard added an unassisted goal of her own before the second half was eight minutes old to finish off the half-opening flurry.
The 3-0 lead held for just over 20 minutes before freshman Pamela Vranis scored the first goal of her career in the 74th minute. Classmate Christina Convey closed the scoring for the Blue Jays in the 89th minute when she connected off an assist from Vranis.
Junior Kristen Redsun was forced to make just one save in a little more than 62 minutes for the Blue Jays. Freshman Kelly Leddy played the final 27:56 in goal for JHU and wasn't forced to make a save in preserving the shutout.
Johns Hopkins dominated the stat sheet as the Blue Jays held advantages in shots (31-6) and corner kicks (9-2).
The Blue Jays will return to action on Sunday when they return to Salisbury to take on the host Sea Gulls. Salisbury lost to Fredonia, 1-0, on Friday in the first game of the three-team weekend series.
