GRANTHAM, PA - The fourth-ranked Johns Hopkins women's soccer team's season came to a heartbreaking end, Saturday afternoon with a 2-0 loss to eighth-ranked Amherst in the "Sweet 16" round of the 2011 NCAA tournament.
The Blue Jays end their stellar season at 21-1, a new school record in both wins and winning percentage (.955). Amherst remains undefeated at 20-0 and will play Messiah in the Elite 8 round, tomorrow afternoon for a chance to go to the Final Four.
Each team had chances in the first half to break open a scoreless game, but the score would remained knotted at zero going into the break. The Blue Jays would hold the lead in shots, 9-5, at the half.
Amherst senior forward, Sarah Duffy, used a rare scoring opportunity from the Hopkins defense in the 56th minute to give the Lord Jeffs a lead. Duffy curtailed a ball from the Blue Jays' defense in midfield, 25 yards out from the goal. With the ball bouncing over Hopkins' back row, Duffy found herself with senior goalkeeper Kristen Redsun between her and the net. A quick strike into the goal gave the Lord Jeffs a 1-0 lead.
Amherst would build a small cushion late in the 66th minute when freshman Ariana Twomey netted her first goal of her career. With the ball being cleared from the Blue Jays' box, Twomey would intercept possession just inside the 18 yard line, aligned with the right post. Her clean strike traveled across the goal line and got past Redsun to put Amherst up, 2-0.
Despite the two goal deficit, the Blue Jays would continue to attack the Lord Jeffs' back line, but could not find the back of the net.
Hopkins held the advantage in corner kicks (9-6) while Amherst led in shots (15-11). Senior Erica Suter led the Blue Jays with three shots while Redsun made nine saves in her first loss of the season.
This was Hopkins fourth-straight trip to the Sweet 16 and seventh-straight appearance in the NCAA tournament.
