BALTIMORE, MD - Senior John Alberici poured in career-highs of 29 points and 12 rebounds to lead Johns Hopkins past visiting Washington College, 74-64, in JHU's final regular season contest on Saturday afternoon in Goldfarb Gym. The Blue Jays close out the year at 7-18 overall and 5-13 in the Centennial Conference, while the Shoremen conclude their season at 7-18 overall and 6-12 in conference play.
Hopkins took a 33-26 advantage into the halftime break, but Washington scored five straight points to open the second stanza to pull with two. The Shoremen continued to hang close early on the second half, before junior Chris Olsen gave the visitors their second lead of the game at 45-44 with a layup at the 13:11 mark.
JHU retook the advantage after a Alberici three-point play a few minutes later and would go on to lead the rest of the way.
Leading 59-55 with just over seven minutes on the clock, the Blue Jays went on what would prove to be the decisive run of the game by scoring eight consecutive points to take a 67-55 advantage with 3:25 left.
The Shoremen cut the JHU edge to 68-64 with just 51 seconds remaining, but the Blue Jays sealed the victory with some strong free throw shooting in the final minute. Freshman Daniel Corbett, junior Tim McCarty and sophomore Adam Spengler went a combined 6-6 from the charity stripe in the waning seconds to close out the win for Hopkins.
Alberici proved to be too much for the Shoremen to handle in the low block, showing an impressive display of post moves and also cleaning up the boards on his way to a career game. The senior shot a stellar 12-14 (.857) from the floor en route to career-highs of 29 points and 12 boards. McCarty grabbed 14 rebounds for Hopkins and also added seven points in the win.
Spengler also reached double figures for the Blue Jays with 12 points, four assists and three steals, while Corbett added seven boards and six boards in the win.
Junior Kevin Breslin led the way for Washington College with 13 points and seven boards, classmate Sal Schittino added 12 points and sophomore Tony Hawkins recorded nine points and grabbed six rebounds.
The game concludes the careers of Alberici and Mike Henrici. Alberici finished with 473 points, 135 rebounds and 45 blocks for his career. Henrici totaled 629 points and 298 rebounds in his three seasons at JHU.
