SALISBURY, MD - Second-ranked Salisbury scored four first half goals en route to a 5-0 win over visiting Johns Hopkins in non-conference field hockey action Wednesday night. The Blue Jays fall to 3-2 on the season, while the Sea Gulls remain unbeaten at 5-0.
Salisbury struck for two quick goals midway through the first as Kristina Fusco and Cailtin Walker scored back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart. Fusco's goal came off a penalty stroke at 16:36 and Walker then added to the lead when she lifted a shot over senior Kim Stein at 18:20.
Courtney Webster took a centering pass from Walker and one-timed it into the cage at 23:20 to push the lead to three. Walker closed out the scoring in the first half as she notched her fifth point of the night when she finished a loose ball in front of the Hopkins cage to send Salisbury into the half with a 4-0 lead. Alison Bloodsworth capped the scoring for the game at 59:21 as she flicked a shot in from the top of the circle.
Stein finished with five saves in one half of action, while junior Elizabeth Peijnenburg had one save in the second half. Senior Zoe Koven had a pair of defensive saves for the Blue Jays. Anna Cooke posted four saves to earn the shutout for the Sea Gulls. Salisbury had the edge in shots (20-8) and corners (10-8) in its third straight win over Hopkins.
Hopkins returns to action on Saturday, September 17 as the Blue Jays return to the Eastern Shore to face Washington College in both teams' Centennial Conference opener. Game time is set for 12:00 pm.
